There’s a sense of propriety in the European soul. Obviously not in all Europeans, but a governor of decorum exists in majorities so vast that the contours of their societies are always bound by it. People generally take only what they pay for, and ask only for what they are due. Which means whites largely behave like everyone is watching.
It’s impossible to overstate the positive social effects of these countless decisions toward temperance. From theft, swindle, or just advantageous lying, every one of us bypass multiple opportunities daily to make a better life for ourselves at the expense of others. These ingrained inhibitions on gouging your peers for personal gain make for the most livable and coveted countries on Earth, if the votes of brown feet are to be counted. Unfortunately they also produce the most fat and succulent marks in history for the six billion+ minorities prone to taking advantage of such unrequited restraint.
That was my recurring thought upon reading this piece by an African businessman who is very enthusiastic about a German minister’s plan to give billions to African businessmen.
In the wake of these pressures, which weigh especially heavy on the shoulders of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose government has boldly embraced thousands of refugees, German Development Minister Gerd Müller announced a new approach to the migration crisis: a new “Marshall Plan,” with the goal of improving conditions in Africa to such a degree that Africans will instead choose to remain at home, rather than fleeing to Europe.
There’s a sharp point cushioned by soft platitudes throughout this entirely good-faith appeal for billions in German taxes. It peeks out snidely from that last quoted sentence.
improve conditions in Africa to such a degree that Africans would rather live there than Europe.
In other words: Pay us off or we’ll swamp you.
Europeans will need to compare the costs of that offer with those of gunboats and machine gun bearing border guards. Though the statement above suggests those costs will be incalculably exorbitant. Because what he’s actually demanding is equalization. Africans won’t stop yearning for Europe just because Africa is made better than it is, but only when Africa is better than the alternative. And since no checkbook on Earth can turn 70IQ societies into Shangri-La, the only option on the table is for Germany to render itself undesirable through destitution. Impoverish yourself or we’ll come do it for you is the offer he presumes Germans can’t refuse.
This is the logical black-hole into which all third-world development proposals are sucked. Better is less than best. And best will always be the most compelling lure. Consider our own perpetual column from Mexico. They are neither starving nor at war. They are also far richer than Africans. If Germans miraculously tripled the per capita income of Kenyans, they’d still be twice as poor as Mexicans. Does anyone think that would cease African migration? No, because it would not equalize the country cabin pressure. And until you are willing to live as they (as they will never live as you) European countries will remain a human pressure vacuum. For western civilization that means hull integrity works in a way that paying air to not slip through your intentionally open cracks never will.
But this is all so obvious it’s practically accessible to Tyler Cowan. What’s less economics and more anthropology is the amusingly African audacity with which the businessman quoted above concludes his request for funding.
If Germany is genuinely committed to an African Marshall Plan, one that treats Africa as a genuine and equal partner; and whose ambition is not a temporary fix to a migration crisis, but an attempt to cooperatively to stimulate entrepreneurship and broad-based economic growth in Africa, then I strongly endorse Chancellor Merkel’s courageous approach to Africa’s development. It will need to contain concessions on opening markets to African goods and services.
I honestly LOL’d reading that. There are few “genuine and equal partners” who extort their counterpart for bribes in exchange for not sacking his home. But that’s a nit compared to the last. You’ll beggar yourself paying us. So much in fact that none of us even want to move there anymore. But look, we’re not the only ones who have to make concessions here, you know. The African cries out in gain as he strikes you.
The complete unconsciousness to concepts such as good-faith exchange or reciprocity is almost witty. It’s like a whole continent full people who talk and behave like no one’s watching. And with our media as the eyes, I suppose no one is.
